The Myth of Vegan Conformity | Are All Vegans Alike?

What do you think when you hear “vegan”?  If long hair in more places than one's head, granola, and tie-dye come to mind, you're not alone.  How about pretentious barista (glorified coffee-server) with a political slogan t-shirt?  You're in good company.

But these are not your future should you decide to go vegan.  It is like assuming all meat-eaters are like that one guy you know who is a total d-bag and happens to eat meat.  In reality, vegans vary widely in countless ways.  Not all are avid environmentalists, health nuts, or morality driven.

There are conservative, yes even Republican vegans, believe it or not. Domion, a fantastic text on the question of animal rights, was written by Matthew Scully, a conservative and former speech writer for president Bush.

There are religious vegans of a variety of backgrounds.  Veganism crosses races and cultures and languages and genders.  There are ripped, strong-ass vegans. there are couch-potato, lazy vegans.

Veganism is not an exclusive club (sorry, actual pretentious vegan barista who is emotionally crushed by the lack of exclusivity in your lifestyle).

Let’s take the reasons for going vegan that we have gone over so far:

  1.  The environment.  maybe you don’t care about the environment.  guess what?  you can be a vegan and still drive your SUV and still take really long showers.  Going vegan doesn’t  mean that you instantly have to carry around pocket mulch and use a solar-powered cell phone.
  2. Health.  Maybe you are not a health nut.  Get ready to take on the full meaning of couch potato.  There’s a wide array of vegan junk foods out there so you can go vegan, have a cruelty-free diet and still give your health the big f you.
  3. Morality.  Maybe you are not concerned about the suffering of animals.   in fact, maybe you don’t like animals at all.  Veganism is the best way to have absolutely nothing to do with animals whatsoever – you don’t have to eat them, you don’t have to use them, you don’t have to interact with them at all!  So, if you hate animals… vegan is actually the way to go.
  4. World hunger, the national debt and your colon – if you don’t want to stop the aggressive bleeding out of the country’s finances or help the starving children of our world — you — might be an asshole… which means colon health is going to be the very most important reason for you to go vegan.  Even those of us who are giant assholes need to care for those who holes properly and nothing does that better than a healthy vegan diet.
  5. Lastly, some people think that veganism just doesn’t jell with things like being athletic, funny, musically talented, an actor, scientist, entrepreneur, writer, physicist, dancer, etc.  But watch the video up above for examples of people who fit all of these descriptions and are vegan!

So regardless of your background, ethnicity, religious preference, or really anything, you too can be vegan!

 See ya next nugget!

Thank you sooo much Emily, for all the work you are doing to help the animals and the vegan community. Your videos are really well done, and I will be sharing them regularly on FB (unfortunately, I have a very small following because most of my FB “friends” think I’m a whack job), but I will faithfully post until they relent and join us in our mission. ;-)
I have been rescuing dogs and cats for over 20 years and currently share my home (and food allowance) with 20 of them. Transitioning the 16 cats to a vegan diet is what I’m working on now. The dogs were easy to switch over to V-Dog. But it’s pretty expensive to have the stuff shipped down to the Virgin Islands, so I am not in a position to donate toward your efforts just yet. I am, however also working on a big business project that can potentially change that (along with the way business is done in the USA). Will keep you posted. :)
